CASE STUDIES

Alan had his own consulting business, loved his career, travelled and worked 6 days a week for 25 years.  But then he got caught up in the downturn in 2008, aged mid 50’s.  He started wondering “What if…

  • The work dries up?
  • My age catches up with me?
  • I start looking ahead and thinking about retirement? What would I do?”

Using the full set of cards, we were able to trigger his thinking about other things he loved doing; about what his priorities might be changing to; about how he might start a planned approach towards reducing his work and enjoying the other parts of his life…

3 years later Alan is still enjoying his work, but doing less hours.  He has increased his range of activities outside work and has made some mid term plans to move into a new home closer to friends and family to help ensure improved quality of relationships which are unrelated to work. The discoveries we made he calls his “touchstone” – his reminder of where he is heading – and he has found it incredibly valuable.

FEEDBACK ON FUTURE FOCUS

My career counsellor introduced me to the Future Focus cards and asked me to explore which options suited me most.  Having to make decisions on each option (card) was helpful and forced me to look at what was most important to me now and for my future work life balance…(Client – Kate)

This card sort created a very easy process for discussion. It generated so many more ideas than Kate and I could have come up with. Having to consider and select priorities was very helpful in creating momentum. (Career Coach – Catherine)
